Correct sunscreen measures to protect your skin from summer UV rays

“Summer” and “sunny days” alone are not enough for UV protection!

Do you think that you should only apply sunscreen in the middle of summer when the sun is strong or when you go for leisure? If so, your skin may be under constant threat from ultraviolet (UV) rays. Ultraviolet rays not only cause age spots and freckles, but also destroy collagen and elastin in the dermis layer deep within the skin, and are the biggest factor in causing “photoaging” such as wrinkles and sagging skin. Approximately 80% of skin aging is said to be due to photoaging.

There are mainly two types of ultraviolet rays: UV-A waves and UV-B waves. UV-B waves cause inflammation on the skin surface and cause sunburn. On the other hand, UV-A rays pass through clouds and window glass and reach deep into the skin, gradually accelerating photoaging. UV-A waves increase rapidly from early spring and continue to rain even on cloudy days, so the golden rule for protecting beautiful skin is to take measures against UV rays ``indoors every day, regardless of the season.''

Tips on how to choose and apply the correct sunscreen

We will introduce how to use sunscreen to effectively prevent UV rays.

1. Selection of SPF/PA value according to the scene Higher numbers do not necessarily mean better. The higher the number, the greater the burden on the skin.

  • SPF (index for preventing UV-B waves): SPF 20 to 30 is sufficient for daily life and small shopping. Choose SPF 30-50 for light sports outdoors, and SPF 50+ for leisure activities at the beach or in the mountains.
  • PA (UV-A protection index): “PA++” is recommended for daily life, and “PA+++~++++” is recommended if you do a lot of outdoor activities.

2. It is most important to apply the specified amount evenly The biggest reason why sunscreen isn’t fully effective is applying too little. If you want to apply it all over your face, the cream type should be about the size of two pearls, and the liquid type should be about the size of two 1-yen coins. First, take an appropriate amount and place it on the forehead, nose, cheeks, and chin, and gently spread from the center of the face outwards. Furthermore, by applying the same amount again, you can prevent uneven coating and create a reliable protective film.

3. “Frequently reapply” every 2 to 3 hours Even if you apply it thoroughly in the morning, the sunscreen will wear off over time due to sweat, sebum, and friction from the mask. Reapplying every 2-3 hours is essential to maintain UV protection. When reapplying over makeup, you can easily refresh your UV protection by using a spray or powder type sunscreen.
